The world is a scary place. I am not talking about criminals, or cancer or war. We all know these things are scary - just watch the news for 10 minutes. I am talking about life. Life is scary in this world. We face so many unknowns every single day. Am I raising my kids to be successful, kind and amazing people? Is this job where I am supposed to be? Sugar-free or no carbs? The list goes on.
FEAR TELLS YOU LIES
The unknowns can paralyze you. They can keep you from pursuing your dreams or making much needed changes in your life. Fear is our biological response to the unknown. Fear will stop you dead in your tracks and tell you that you are not good enough. It will tell you that you aren't there yet. You aren't smart enough or strong enough. Fear will tell you success is for those lucky ones.
One of the most important things I learned from Amy and Jordan Demos is that "Success is not for the chosen few, but for those who choose." They reiterated this time after time, after time at their workshop. The more they said it, the more I knew that if I was going to make my photography business not just work, but thrive, I needed to throw my fears out the window and choose success.
FEAR WILL STOP YOU
Fear is like that pesky neighbor that comes knocking on your door everyday asking for something. Today it's just one egg, tomorrow it will be a cup of sugar, a week from now they will ask to borrow your car. If you don't stop them, in a month or two they will need a place to stay because their spouse kicked them out of the house.
Fear will start small. At first fear will ask for something so small - just a whisper, "don't send that email just yet, think about it, you don't want to sound needy or desperate for business. You don't want to sound dumb." You may not even recognized this as fear. The next day, fear will whisper a tad louder, "you can't do that, you don't have enough experience. You don't know what you are doing." You need to stop fear right then and there. Then you need to keep stopping it. Every. Single. Day. Because, just like that pesky neighbor, fear will keep showing up until it has taken everything that is important to you. Your dreams, your relationships, your happily ever after.
IN THE TRENCHES
Do you know what is inspiring about individuals who are not yet "successful", but are working at it every single day? They have grit. Building a business, going back to school, being a good parent, these are all really hard things. Everyday is an unknown and you have to figure it out or give up. These individuals haven't reached a summit where they can look back and see how all those late nights and early mornings have paid off. They are in the trenches, just trying to not drowned. They are facing their fears and telling them to go find your eggs and sugar somewhere else because you can't have mine. If that is not inspiring, I don't know what is.
I have fears I deal with everyday. Doing something important is not easy - if it was, everyone would do it. What fears are knocking on your door and holding you back from choosing success?
Cheers to all of you out there facing your fears!
