I will never forget the day I fell in love with coffee. To be clear- flavored, espresso, latte, concoctions. I was up at Michigan State University attending my freshman year of college. My friends and I would go to the main library on campus most week nights to study. There is just something about being out of you dorm room and in a quiet library that always helped me buckle down and get some serious studying done.
The down side to a quiet library is the, um....silence. Silence = sleep for a college kid. However, there was a cafe (placed there by angels, I'm convinced), with all the delicious baked goods, snacks and of course coffee you could imagine. I loved getting a lemon poppy-seed muffin from the cafe before I sat down to study. You know, those really big ones that are like 700 calories each and should never be consumed in one sitting.... yeah, I would eat it all in like 10 minuets. Besides all those empty calories, herein lies the problem: lemon poppy-seed muffins lack one vital ingredient —caffeine! We would find a nice big table at the library, spread out our notes, books, highlighters and within 20 minutes I was dozing off.
My friend Lauren, drank lots of coffee. Lauren was a coffee connoisseur. Like brew coffee with a French Press, coffee connoisseur. She always bought a cup of coffee from the (heaven sent) cafe when we went to the library to study. I never thought to get any because I “knew”, coffee smells amazing and tastes disgusting. There was no way I would be able to choke down a cup. Then Lauren introduced me to the mocha and my life began!
As I’ve gotten older (I really hate using that phrase by the way), I’ve branched out a bit. I have a Nespresso machine and I make lattes ( plain, no flavoring) everyday at home. I’ll also tolerate plain coffee with cream if I’m desperate.
But, those sweet mochas. They got me through college. Seriously. Mochas and friendships. I would have been a dropout otherwise.
I’d love to hear how you like your coffee! Leave me a comment below and let’s bond over java!
